- Comet 3.0, The Cornell Macintosh Terminal Emulator
-
- Comet 3.0B3 is the latest version of Comet, available from
- ftp.cit.cornell.edu in the /pub/mac/comm/test directory. Comet, the
- Cornell Macintosh Terminal Emulator, may be freely used as long as
- the restrictions in the copyright notice in the "About Comet..."
- menu item are observed.
-
- UPGRADE/INSTALLATION NOTE: To ensure that keyboard mapping works
- correctly, you need to copy the "Comet keyboard-No Diacritics"
- keyboard layout into your System. This resource has changed in
- order to avoid a bug which sometimes occurs when Comet is used in
- conjunction with Word and Excel.
-
- Comet is a full-featured Macintosh Terminal Emulator offering up to
- 16 windows with fast color emulations of the Heath H19, Digital
- VT102, or IBM 3278-{2,3,4,5} in 9, 12, 16, 24, and 36 point font
- sizes. Serial and MacTCP connections are supported (3270 emulation is
- available over MacTCP only; a similar ASCII interface is supported with
- a Heath-19 terminal emulation through the IBM 7171). As of yet the
- Comm Toolbox is not supported.
-
- Comet uses Macintosh documents to store configuration information on
- each session. Each Comet terminal session has an a scrollback buffer
- with scrollbars on the emulator window and an associated TextEdit window,
- the ".edit window," which can be used to edit text (which can be made
- upload/download target window with automatic line wrapping/unwrapping),
- to compose and execute macros, and to log session data (as an
- alternative to using the scrollback buffer). A Find command allows you
- to search either the .edit window or the scrollback buffer. Print,
- Copy, and Paste are supported; Comet also supports session logging to
- disk.
-
- Comet supports macros and macro recording. A macro can be associated
- with a key or a mouse double click; Comet can execute a macro when a
- connection is opened or closed to allow automatic access to
- Telnet servers. Key macros may be up to 10K in length; the scripting
- language offers a match-string function to wait for host output so that
- macros can execute reliably.
-
- On-line documentation can be viewed and searched using a .edit
- window. Note especially that many functions in Comet are available
- only as key macro settings, e.g., disabling cursor positioning for
- the ASCII terminals. Configuring these options in a Connection macro
- will allow you to permanently configure one of these options for
- a session.
-
- File transfer support is somewhat limited, including a locally
- developed IBM mainframe protocol for serial and network connections
- (ft3270) and a TFTP server for users connected to a TCP/IP network.
- Serial transfer for ASCII emulators is not supported. Comet supports
- automatic local printing of downloaded files with special name
- extensions (e.g., ".print").
-
- Comet functions with standard UNIX vt102 termcaps (an "stty rows nn
- columns nn" in your .login is needed to reconfigure the screen size) and
- performs well with VMS on Digital mainframes also. VT100 windows can be
- up to 32K in total text area, e.g., 100 rows X 320 columns.
-
- The IBM emulations specifically support the extended character set
- used by the NOTIS library card catalog system; Comet supports printing
- of this character set when the Comet-fonts are installed in the Fonts
- folder. A Comet document which maps the keyboard to be nearly
- identical to an IBM 3163 with the ALA character set option is included
- in the CometExternal distribution.
-
- The most current version of Comet is available on ftp.cit.cornell.edu
- in the directory "/pub/mac/comm/"; the complete Comet package,
- including documentation and the IBM host file transfer and 7171 support
- files, is available in "/pub/mac/comm/cometExternal/". The most
- current development version is available in "/pub/mac/comm/test/".
-
- If you find a bug in Comet, please send a bug report to
-
- comet-bugs@nmc.cit.cornell.edu
-
- using the Bug Report form in Comet's Apple menu. You can send comments
- or requests to
-
